Cape Town - Cape Town is set to witness a two-week “Food Dialogues” programme featuring expert panel discussions, cooking classes for children and adults, walking tours and art installations.

To be hosted by the SA Urban Food & Farming Trust with co-host and sponsor SOLVE@Waterfront, from July 18 to August 1, “Food Dialogues” will look at the present-day societal relationship with food by looking at key aspects of the food system and how to better govern it.

SA Urban Food & Farming Trust CEO Kurt Ackermann said: “Food is also society’s mirror – a reflection of classism and inequality. These challenges require more engagement, sharing of ideas, expertise and innovation, but also celebration of our cross-cultural identities and foodways.”

The programme will shed light on how history shapes the modern-day food system in Cape Town, with art works on display at the V&A Waterfront, Luxury Lane as well as screenings at Bertha House and Philippi Village.

The Food System Walking Tours of Philippi Village will offer a two-hour experience which will include a farm-to-fork meal at Phunga, the Village cafe.

Jane Battersby, a UCT senior lecturer in environmental and geographical science, said: “If the last few years have taught us anything, it is about the value of food as part of our health, our economy, our society and our cultures.

“Food Dialogues is a space to engage with some of the big questions shaping the future of food through conversations, through food futures visioning, through action and through eating.”

Some of the events will be free. However, all participants must register at fooddialogues.info
