Cape Town – The Mossel Bay municipality’s environmental team was hard at work on Monday morning after being tasked with removing a whale carcass that beached between Brak River and Hersham beach.

The team has been busy with the removal since 8.30am.

Mossel Bay municipality has also closed the beach due the oily residue from the whale decomposition process, and explained that the oily residue will leave a long-lasting smelly residue on feet, shoes or anything it touches.

The site where the whale carcass is being removed has been cordoned off while the removal takes place today.

The municipality has also requested the public to refrain from walking on the beach whilst they are busy removing a whale carcass.

“The public will be informed once the beach reopens,” the municipality said.

The last whale carcass to wash ashore along the Cape was a Humpback whale carcass on Strand Beach in November.

The carcass was taken to the Vissershok landfill for disposal on November 27 after a massive 18-hour operation by the City of Cape Town to remove the adult male Humpback whale that was 15m long and weighed a total 20 tons.
