Cape Town - Over 200 Latin and Ballroom dancers from various regions and clubs competed in the annual Western Cape Provincial Championships on Saturday at the Belhar Indoor Sport Centre hosted by the Federation of Dance Sport Western Cape.

Dancers aged 10 to 60 gathered for the competition.

The competition also marked a significant moment for dancers who qualified to receive their prestigious provincial colours, a recognition of their dedication, hard work and exceptional achievements in dance sport.

The Federation of Dance Sport South Africa is also proudly celebrating its 30th anniversary, with provincial chairperson for the Federation of Dance Sport Western Cape, DavidJohn Michael Steyn, saying it was a milestone achieved through the dedication of visionary leaders, many of whom hail from the Western Cape.

“Additionally, this competition serves as the first qualifier for dancers aiming to earn their provincial colours for 2025, setting the stage for continued excellence in the sport.

“Provincial colours symbolise a dancer’s representation of their province at national and international competitions, highlighting their elite status and commitment to excellence.

“It fosters pride and identity within the dance community, inspiring younger athletes to pursue their dreams.”

Dance partners Zea Abdul and Angelo van Reenen have been dancing together for six years and landed first place in Latin in the Adult Championship category.

Abdul, 23, from Manenberg also took second place in Ballroom and said she started dancing at the age of 12 years old.

“The championships on Saturday were amazing. Everyone brought their A-game and came to win. I am happy with my placement because we worked hard and it feels good to know that I put in the work and got the results I worked for.”

Van Reenen, 24, from Lavender Hill, started dancing since the age of eight years.

“The competition was very nice and motivating as an athlete. The atmosphere was great. I enjoy dancing because of the continued rewards including self growth and goals I have achieved through dancing,” he said.

Following the event, many of the dancers will head to Limpopo in October to compete in the Federation of Dance Sport South Africa National Championships, where the ultimate title of South Africa’s best dancer will be awarded.

“The financial burden of attending the national competition is significant, and we welcome sponsorships to help make these talented dancers’ dreams come true,” said Steyn.
