Cape Town - For their 67 minutes of Mandela Day, non-profit organisation Rise Against Hunger (RAH) will be hosting a food packing initiative at Makers Landing at the Waterfront that will benefit Early Childhood Development (ECD) facilities.

RAH have confirmed over 20 companies will be donating on the day, and will have over 300 volunteers working on the day. They’ve set a target of packing 52 000 meals for the day, with a national total of 1 million for the month of July.

Of the 52 000 meals, five meals a week will be donated to the respective ECD centres that RAH supports through their ECD Connect Programme.

In total, more than 200 children will receive a meal pack that contains the necessary nutrients essential for the children’s well-being and development.

Brain Nell, Rise Against Hunger’s CEO, said Mandela Day had become an occasion to do good and make a change in the lives of others.

“The overarching objective of Mandela Day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and in doing so build a global movement for good.

“The 18th of July has become a national day of volunteerism, philanthropy and donating time, goods, resources and services to a variety of beneficiaries across the country,” he said.

He was also grateful to be partnering with Makers Landing this year. With their passion for food and creating change one plate at a time, and the support that they’ve shown towards RAH and helping to combat the food security troubles that so many children face.

The event takes place on Friday, July 15 in four dedicated 67-minute time slots from 9am to 4pm.
