Cape Town - As many schools will reopen on Tuesday to start the fourth academic term, Raithby Primary School in Stellenbosch will be facing the devastating loss of their principal, Eugene Peter van Graan.

Van Graan, 54, was killed along with his wife Elma, 52, their daughter Euodia, 23, and her boyfriend Ronwan Adams, 23, in an accident on the R44 near Stellenbosch at about 10pm on Saturday.

Their car is suspected to have slid after a turn, crashing into a sand embankment before rolling and landing in a canal.

Stellenbosch police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Messages of condolence have been pouring in for the family since Sunday, and on Monday the Raithby Primary School confirmed the news to their community.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved principal, Mr Eugene Peter van Graan, his wife, daughter and her boyfriend.

“Mr Van Graan was an amazing colleague, father, husband, friend, brother, son and a hero.

“We salute you, sir, we appreciate everything you have done for the school, learners and the communities.

“We keep his two sons and grandchildren in our prayers and wish them strength and comfort in this time of need,” the school said.

The school is expecting to hold a memorial service for the family, where community members and friends will join pupils and pay their respects.

Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said the department visited the school after being informed about the accident.

“The WCED has visited the school and has arranged for one of the head of departments to act as principal in the interim.

“Our condolences to the family, friends and the school community for their tragic loss. Counselling support will be made available for learners upon their return to school,” Hammond said.

Acting principal Ruben Steyn said the incident was a heavy blow to the school and community.

“I’ve known Mr Van Graan for nearly 10 years, as everyone would tell you he was a loving person and easy to work with. He has been at the school for about four years now, a very accommodating person who wanted to please everyone.

“The learners and staff will miss him tremendously, he has left a huge hole.

“During Covid-19 he was at the forefront delivering and arranging food parcels for pupils and the community,” said Steyn.

St Paul’s Faure Primary School said Van Graan was a leader, father figure and mentor for many.

Stellenbosch mayor Gesie van Deventer said Van Graan was a beloved principal and a great spirit in the Raithby community.

“We will always remember his love for children and passion for education.

This news has shocked our community deeply.

“I ask that you keep the families in your thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time.”
