‘Gangsters’ back in the dock on 28 charges

Cape Town - A new lawyer has been appointed to the case of seven alleged Hanover Park gangsters facing 28 criminal charges, including murder and attempted murder.

On Monday, the accused – Mikyle Davids, Tyrone Davids, Mikyle Abdullah, Shamieg Matheon, Moenzier January, Malieka Meyer and MoegamatcKamish – appeared at the Pollsmoor Prison Court after the matter was previously postponed for further investigation.

However, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, said the matter was postponed again to October 18 “because the lawyer of accused one (Mikyle Davids) withdrew and a new lawyer came on board”.

The accused, all linked to the Laughing Boys gang which operates in the Hanover Park area, had all previously pleaded not guilty to the 28 criminal charges against them. The charges also include illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The matter has so far heard the submitted plea explanations from January and Kamish.

January submitted a lengthy written plea explanation while Kamish’s was verbal through his legal representative.

At a previous court appearance, Ntabazalila said Kamish’s legal representative told the court: “My client was not aware of any firearms kept at his premises.

“He first became aware of them when police came to arrest him.” Kamish remains out on bail while the rest remain in custody.

Two of the accused are currently serving sentences for unrelated cases.

Abdullah is serving four years in jail after he was sentenced for illegal possession of a firearm, while Matheson is serving five years for a similar charge The group collectively face charges of aiding and abetting the activities of a criminal gang, six counts of murder among themselves, two of attempted murder and many counts of illegal possession of a firearms and ammunition.
