Cape Town - In less than 48 hours, seven people have been shot and killed in Vrygrond in suspected gang revenge shootings at the weekend. The first incident on Friday night resulted in two suspected gangsters being killed.

A resident said: “We are trying to make sense of the situation because taxis have been targeted after that.

It’s difficult for taxi drivers to work because of this.”

Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said: “On Friday at about 10pm, Muizenberg police members attended a shooting incident in Neville Riley Road, Vrygrond.

Upon their arrival at the scene they discovered the bodies of two males aged 34 and 30. Both are known members of a gang grouping. The motive is possibly gang-related.”

Hours later a taxi driver was attacked on Drury Road on Saturday morning. Van Wyk said officers responded to the crime scene at about 6.30am and found the body of a 30-year-old man.

“The deceased was located inside a minibus taxi and had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The motive is possibly taxi-related conflict.”

At about 5pm on that day, two more people were killed in Apple Road. “On arrival of the members at the hospital, they were shown the body of a 28-year-old male. The deceased was allegedly shot at his residence in Apple Road at about 4.10pm. (The) motive is unknown.”

An hour later, while responding to the Apple Road incident, officers discovered the body of a 40-year-old man in the same street. “He is a known gang member. The shooting occurred at about 4.30pm and is possibly linked to the earlier incident at Apple Road.

A murder docket (was) opened.” Anyone with information can anonymously contact Crime Stop on 0860010111 or SMS Crime Line on 32211.
