Durban – At least 49 people were treated by paramedics after being injured in three crashes in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend.

On Sunday, two people were injured in a crash on Chris Hani Road, near the N2 in Avoca.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst, a truck transporting cement overturned. Two men in the truck sustained moderate injuries, he said.

On Saturday, two people were seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash on the M4 (southern freeway) Durban-bound, near the Quality Street offramp.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they arrived at the scene just after 8pm.

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said paramedics arrived to find the bus lying on its side.

“The injured were freed from the wreckage with assistance from Rusa members and the public. The injured sustained mild to moderate injuries,” said Balram.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the three crashes adding that there was no case opened in relation to the truck crash on Chris Hani Road.

“Greenwood Park police were called to a scene on Chris Hani Road where a truck had overturned. The driver sustained minor injuries, no case was opened. On Saturday June 25, 2022, at 10.20pm the police were called to an accident scene on M4 northbound, on, arrival they found one passenger with serious injuries. A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened at Wentworth SAPS and the matter is under investigation. Verulam police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving after they were called to a scene where a bus overturned at Waterloo,” says Ngcobo.
