Durban teacher, portrait and event photographer Nirdev Udith, 50, showcased his work at the Bike and Bean Forest Café in uMhlanga on Sunday.

Udith, who also captures landscapes from his walks through the city of Durban or travels in South Africa, said the exhibition idea came about when he was looking for a platform to showcase his images of Durban.

“In a casual conversation with the owner of the Bike and Bean – Durban about the images, the idea was born,” he said.

He also said that he aims to expose people of Durban to the beauty around them which they might not see during their busy days.

Udith, who lives in Parlock, Durban, said that he has been a teacher for 24 years, but has always enjoyed taking pictures of nature, especially the sunrise when he was on the beach.

Udith also said that he has been a photographer since August 2019 when he bought his first single-lens reflex camera. Since then his business has grown with the assistance of his teenage daughter Dipti. She is responsible for his behind-the-scenes video footage and still shots.

Udith said there were other milestones along the way, such as when he printed and distributed his first desk calendar, featuring images of Durban’s landmarks, in 2022. His inspiration came from emotion: seeing people happy makes him happy. Nature is also a great source of inspiration and today the scene provided just that: nature.

The photographer said that the reception for the exhibition from the customers at the café was nothing short of amazing.

“In this the first exhibition it was rewarding to hear the compliments and the curious nature of people about the prints,” Udith said.

Udith said that he has plans to host another exhibition in the next two weeks at the Sunkist Life Savers Club, North Beach.
