Durban — Amanzimtoti police are investigating a case of robbery after an employee and his colleagues were robbed of cash and cellphones.
Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said the complainant alleged that on Wednesday at 7.35pm, he and his colleagues were at work in Winklespruit when they were accosted by six armed men.
“At gunpoint the suspects robbed them of cash and cellphones before they fled the scene in their gateway vehicle. A case of robbery was opened at Amanzimtoti police station for investigation,” Ngcobo said.
Information circulating on social media suggests that it was the Winklespruit Spar that was robbed. The suspects, believed to be 12, were armed with rifles. It is alleged they arrived in a white Mercedes-Benz and a white Renault Duster. After the robbery, they fled in an unknown direction.
The robbery comes a day after two armed suspects allegedly held up an MTN store employee at the Westville Mall and made off with 15 cellphones and cash.
Information circulating on social media alleges that the store was robbed by two suspects travelling in a white Renault Duster.
Ngcobo said a woman alleged that at 3.50pm on Tuesday, she was working at a business premises in Westville when she was accosted by two armed suspects.
“At gunpoint, the suspects robbed her of 15 cellphones and cash before fleeing the crime scene,” Ngcobo said.
“A case of business robbery was opened at the Westville police station for investigation.”
Westville Mall management confirmed that two armed suspects held up staff at the MTN store on Tuesday afternoon.
“Our security team were immediately on site where patrons were ushered to safety and warning shots discharged. There were no injuries and no damage to property,” management said.
