Durban — A Durban father is pleading with the SAPS to conduct regular psychiatric evaluations on its members to prevent them from killing innocent people.
Sandile Msomi made the plea after his daughter Enhle Majozi was murdered, allegedly by policeman Mlungisi Blessing Sikhakhane, 27.
In separate incidents, two other policemen are appearing on charges of murder in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court.
Sikhakhane is alleged to have shot and killed Sithembile Ngobese, 24, and Majozi, 18, with whom he had been in a romantic relationship. Sikhakhane was expected to apply for bail on Monday.
Msomi called on the SAPS to ascertain whether members were still fit for the job.
“Processes must be in place to make sure their brains are still capable of doing the job. They are walking around with a gun and then this happens,” Msomi said.
Meanwhile, Mariannhill SAPS Sergeant Ayanda Doctor Ntombela, who is out on bail of R20 000, is alleged to have taken Sihle Mtshare in for questioning on August 21.
Mtshare was not seen again until his body was found in Camperdown. According to Mtshare’s family, Ntombela could not specify why he was arresting Mtshare and when they went to look for him the following day at the Mariannhill police station, nobody knew about his case.
The family conducted a search at nearby police stations and hospitals and even took to social media posting Mtshare as missing.
It is alleged that a man who had been arrested on the same day as Mtshare assisted the family in identifying Ntombela as the investigating officer. After two weeks the family said they received a call from the Independent Police Investigative Directorate to identify a body at Camperdown.
Ntombela is due to again appear in court on November 10.
Constable Lungisani Xaba of KwaDabeka was refused bail during a court appearance in July.
Xaba is expected to again appear in court next Friday. He is alleged to have assaulted his 70-year-old mother Greta Xaba in KwaDabeka. Xaba allegedly hit her with a wooden plank with nails in it on May 6.
