Durban — A satellite station was launched in Inanda, north of Durban, on Wednesday.
The station, eTafuleni satellite police station will help the Inanda police station to intensify crime-fighting in the area.
The station was launched by eThekwini Municipality mayor Mxolisi Kaunda and Police Minister Bheki Cele.
The station will form part of the municipality’s multi-pronged crime-fighting initiatives and help rid Inanda township of crime.
Kaunda said the satellite station was part of the municipality’s crime-prevention strategies.
He also said it was a clear demonstration of what could be achieved when government and business worked together to fight crime.
“Crime has a negative impact on the city’s economy which is why it is important to reduce crime hot spot areas. It is vital to mobilise communities and business through their own structures to work with the municipality to form a united front with the police to fight crime. We want to commend the owner of the Octavia Hotel for donating the facility that has enabled us to establish a satellite station in this area,” Kaunda said.
Cele said law-enforcement would do everything possible to ensure that they rid the township of Inanda of criminal activities.
“We will not tolerate criminals and their activities. The provincial and national governments are embarking on activities and programmes that will hold every criminal accountable,” Cele said.
The municipality has several crime-prevention strategies including the soon-to-be-launched Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) satellite police station.
On Friday, Kaunda will launch the satellite station at the Durban ICC.
The new station will support Durban metro police in their operations of safeguarding investors and people living, working and visiting the area.
The station at Durban ICC will be able to respond quickly to busier crime areas in the precinct while giving the public easier access to metro police service.
