Durban — The Jacob Zuma-led uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) is set to mark its first anniversary with an extravagant gala dinner at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban, on Monday.

This follows what the party hailed as a “successful“ inaugural celebration at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday.

Access to the event is not for the faint-hearted; individual seats are valued at R2 million, sliding down to R66 000, with further back seats costing R25 000.

To sit next to former president Zuma in what is called the "platinum spear" will set one back a staggering R2m for 30 seats.

Other options include the golden spear table for R15 million and the silver spear table valued at R1 million.

During the event to mark the first anniversary of the MKP on Sunday, Zuma said: “We must fight to free ourselves from the oppression of the people who control our wealth. No one will do it, but ourselves.”

Zuma said the MKP, which was founded last year, was the only party that would deliver the impoverished South Africans to the promised land.

“We will continue to fight as the uMkhonto weSizwe Party to free people, regardless of race, from the current oppression of race. Our role as the MKP is to make sure that we are equal and united to the goals of uniting the country,” said Zuma.

"Purchasers of gala dinner tables will receive complimentary suite tickets for the mass public celebration suites, ensuring a seamless and exclusive experience throughout the celebrations," a party statement disclosed.

The MKP finds itself in the opposition benches despite securing 45% of the vote in KwaZulu-Natal, which is now to lead the provincial government, led by the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU), which includes parties such as the DA and the IFP.
