Durban — The Pinetown Magistrate’s Court has relaxed the bail conditions of a former police sergeant charged with murder and kidnapping to accommodate his new employment as VIP Protection for a KZN chief.

Ayanda Doctor Ntombela who also faces theft and defeating the ends of justice charges. He is out on R20 000 bail. Ntombela had already resigned from the Mariannhill police station by the time he was applying for bail.

In court on Thursday his counsel applied for the relaxation of his bail conditions as Ntombela was to start work as VIP Protection for a KZN chief.

Ntombela allegedly took Sihle Mtshare, 27, in for questioning on August 21. He disappeared thereafter. His body was later found in Camperdown.

The family said the officer could not specify why he was arresting Mtshare, however, when they went to look for him the following day at the Mariannhill police station nobody knew about his case.

The court previously heard that Ntombela had taken police to where a sniffer dog found the body, after he had allegedly been tipped off on the location by an unknown caller.

The fact that the officer accused of her son’s murder was “getting on with life” irked Sebenzile Phungula who is the mother of slain Mtshare.

Outside court, she said: “I feel like my pain has been multiplied, the law is not working … that someone accused of murder, kidnapping and went to show where the body was got bail of R20 000, and today we hear he has a job.”

The matter was adjourned for further investigation to December 13 as the post-mortem report, chain and three witness statements were outstanding from investigations.
