Durban — A 33-year-old man arrested for the murder of a policeman is expected to be back in court on September 21.
Phinda Shongwe appeared briefly in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after he was arrested in Hammarsdale.
Michael Jameson, 52, an off-duty police officer was shot and killed on May 4, 2022, while intervening in a hijacking.
Jameson was waiting outside his daughter’s school when he noticed a hijacking nearby.
He went to help but came under fire.
Jameson was an officer with the Durban public order policing unit.
According to the charge sheet, Shongwe unlawfully and intentionally assaulted (S Dhayaran) who was the driver of a C63 Mercedes-Benz, valued at R750 000 during a hijacking.
It further stated that Shongwe used violence or threats of violence to take Dhayaran's belongings.
The State argued that it intended on opposing bail adding that Shongwe was also recently arrested in connection with a Hammarsdale robbery.
The State alleges that the suspect killed Jameson and used violence and assault to hijack a car.
Shongwe is facing charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
He will be remanded until his next court appearance.
