Durban — Four suspects are expected to appear in court on Tuesday for robbery after they allegedly robbed a woman of her cellphone in central Durban.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said Durban Central police officers were working at OR Tambo Parade when they arrested four robbery suspects found in possession of the cellphone that was robbed.

Gwala said that according to the victim, at 5.50am she was robbed of her cellphone by four men travelling in a vehicle. They stole her cellphone and fled in their vehicle.

“Police officers swiftly responded and an extensive search for the vehicle was conducted. At 6.20am, police spotted the vehicle on OR Tambo Parade and tactically approached the vehicle,” Gwala said.

“On searching the vehicle and the suspects, police recovered a toy gun, an okapi knife and three cellphones, one of which was positively identified by the victim.”

Gwala said that four suspects, aged between 19 and 22, were arrested and will be charged for robbery and possession of suspected stolen property.

“They will appear before Durban Magistrate’s Court on October 18. Suspects will be profiled to check if they are linked to other cases that had been reported where people have been robbed of their cellphones at gunpoint,” Gwala said.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old suspect was expected to appear in court on Monday for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Gwala said that on October 15, at 12.30pm, KwaMashu police acted on intelligence about a man in unlawful possession of a firearm.

“Police proceeded to the Kholwa Road Hostel and on searching the identified suspect, a revolver with its serial numbers erased was found in his possession. Police arrested a 24-year-old suspect for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition,” Gwala said.
