Durban — Inkosi Phathisizwe Luthuli of Mnini traditional council, south of Durban, remains hospitalised after recently surviving a crash on the N3 near Pinetown.

Inkosi was rushed to Busamed Hospital in Hillcrest after his car overturned and rolled several times on the N3 near Pinetown. He was on his way home after attending a choral music event in Pietermaritzburg over the weekend.

Speaking to the Daily News while in hospital, Luthuli said he did not know how he survived such a terrible accident.

He said he was passing Pinetown when he suffered a blackout and lost control of the car, adding he was unconscious for a couple of minutes and when he gained consciousness he realised he was injured and his car had overturned.

“After gaining consciousness I realised I was bleeding from the head and suddenly I was surrounded by police who called the ambulance for me. I still can’t believe that I'm still alive and don’t know how I survived,” said Luthuli.

He said he had to be stitched in the head but was still at the hospital receiving further treatment and was responding well to the treatment, adding that he was expecting to be released soon.

Luthuli’s sister, Fikile Hlongwa said they were shocked when the family received news that Luthuli was involved in an accident and rushed to the hospital, adding fortunately they found him talking and were able to hear how it happened.

Hlongwa said they thanked God that Inkosi did not die in the accident.

“When you look at how damaged his car was, you start asking yourself how he survived, but we thank God he is still alive,” said Hlongwa.

Luthuli’s tribal area stretches from Umgababa to the Umkomaas River on the South Coast.
