Durban – Sarah van Heerden and Greg Lock started their long journey, cycling from Johannesburg to Cape Town, with the aim of raising R100 000 for the Kloof and Highway SPCA Sterilisation Outreach Clinic.
Van Heerden, the SPCA operations manager, and Lock are completing day 3 today (Mon). Money raised goes towards the Outreach Clinic for the Dassenhoek area in Durban and will benefit animals in these communities that would otherwise have remained untreated and vulnerable to cruelty.
The pair aim to cycle the 1 600km journey as an unsupported non-stop cycle race from Johannesburg to Blouberg in the Western Cape.
Having departed from Vanderbijlpark on Saturday they will be pedalling through Bloemfontein, Colesberg, Richmond, Loxton, Fraserberg, Sutherland and Ceres.
Sarah hopes to complete the race in under six days.

The SPCA is pleading for funds to help sterilise and prevent further unnecessary cruelty. On Monday morning they departed from Springfontein, where they spent the night.
Close friend Andy Masters said Van Heerden is one of the toughest persons he has met.
“She has raced a lot of the races I have organised, always supported by her husband Andre van Heerden. This year she is doing the Massive Adventures 1000 Miler Challenge Joburg-Blouberg.
“Sarah won the race on the old route several years ago. The new route is tougher and on gravel roads. Please donate to her cause and make a difference. Animals can’t speak for themselves but we can speak for them,” Masters said.
The Kloof and Highway SPCA will be holding an Outreach Clinic from October 3 to Friday, October 7. The SPCA is focusing on the Dassenhoek and Tshelimnyama communities. The aim is to sterilise, treat and inoculate as many animals in that week as possible.
The clinic has been scheduled during the school holidays to ensure that the inspectors and staff are able to educate the owners and children. A vital aspect of our work is educating the communities on all aspects of owning an animal.
