Durban – KwaZulu-Natal ANC provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo has finally vacated his position as mayor of Greater Kokstad Local Municipality.
Mtolo officially handed over the mayoral chain and duties to new mayor Lwanda Madikizela, who was sworn-in on Thursday morning.
Mtolo resigned a few days after being elected to the provincial position in July and was serving a notice until Wednesday. His new position requires him to work full-time in the party’s Durban headquarters and had to resign as mayor.
Madikizela was the speaker before being promoted to the mayoral position. His position went to Bheki Nozaza, who was a councillor.
Their election was welcomed by the Harry Gwala ANC Youth League since both are young and still members of the structure.
The regional league spokesperson Nomusa Phungula told the Daily News on Thursday that they were very excited at the election of their members, saying they were happy with the confidence shown by the mother body to their members.
“The ANC Youth League in the region extends its best wishes for success to them as they carry this baton. They are young capable leaders who grew up in the structures of the ANC Youth League in Nelson Mandela Branch and Lindelani Branch respectively. This historic move serves as a vote of confidence to all young people of our Region by the African National Congress and we are confident that these young lions will execute their responsibilities diligently,” said Phungula.
She said all of them as young people of the region would look up to them with great expectations that they will take the municipality to new heights.
Phungula said the league had full confidence that the new mayor and his executive members will hit the ground running in an endeavour to fulfil the fundamental task of continuing to improve the capacity of the Kokstad Municipality in fulfilling its constitutional mandate.
The league also thanked the former mayor for the work he did for the people of Kokstad and wished him well in his future endeavours.
