Durban — The SA National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers have started repairing a road in eSkebheni, Inanda, north of Durban, following April's heavy rains and flooding.

Major Mpho Mathebula said that soldiers began road repairs on Tuesday.

“Several roads were either washed away or damaged, isolating and restricting community members,” Mathebula said.

“Those with cars in the area have not been able to utilise them to get to work or home, depending on their location when the roads were washed away.”

Sergeant Ditshetlana William Ntshakane operates the excavator while Sergeant Johannes Sweetwell Vaarland looks on.

Resident Nonhlanhla Dlamini said she was on her way back from work when the road was washed away.

“I have not been able to park my car in my garage for four months,” Dlamini said.

“Since that day I have been parking my car at another house and walking home because there is no longer a road. Others are now using taxis because their cars are stuck on this side of the damaged road,” Dlamini added.

Mathebula said that the team of four soldiers, led by Major Thamsanqa Makhiqi will be working hard to assist the community to regain mobility to as many areas as possible in the area.

Ntando Dlamini frustrated at not having full access to his homestead since the April floods.
