Durban — A restaurant in Isipingo, south of Durban, was shut down after it was found to have been operating without a proper business licence, selling expired food and non-compliance with municipal by-laws.
The eThekwini Municipality said that the restaurant was shut down by the Operation Good Hope team.
Operation Good Hope is aimed at cleaning the city and surrounding areas.
“The restaurant was also filthy and selling expired food and was overall not compliant with municipal by-laws,” the municipality said.
“During the clean-up, a restaurant was also closed for non-compliance with municipal health by-laws. Among their contraventions was using a drill to mix the dough.”
The municipality urged businesses to adhere to the city’s by-laws to ensure the safety and well-being of customers.
“The city recognises the important role businesses, and the informal economy, play in creating jobs. However, all businesses must operate within the ambit of the law,” the municipality said.
The municipality also urged residents to be aware of products they buy for consumption.
The call comes after Metro Police arrested a man, 45, for producing counterfeit alcohol in Inanda. Police found 12 x 200ml full bottles of fake Smirnoff vodka, 12 x 750ml full bottles of fake Smirnoff vodka in a case, 4 x 25 litres of fake Smirnoff vodka, brand new Smirnoff vodka boxes for packaging, multiple Smirnoff vodka caps, a jar and a red funnel for filling the bottles.
The municipality said municipal employees also inspected a traffic light control box as part of ongoing inspections to ensure it is working optimally for the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
In November 2021, eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said the municipality would enhance its service delivery programmes such as Operation Sukuma Sakhe and Operation Good Hope where the municipality leadership and operational teams visit service delivery hotspots every two weeks to attend to challenges of refuse collections, water leaks, clearing of verges, illegal dumping sites, street lights, sewer spillages and pothole patching.
