Durban – The KwaMakhutha SAPS victim-friendly room was recently renovated after it was found to be unfriendly.
Earlier this week, the SAPS reported that KwaMakhutha SAPS, KwaZulu-Natal Department of Community Safety and Liaison and various stakeholders embarked on an anti-gender-based violence programme addressing the community of KwaMakhutha.
During the community engagement, KwaMakhutha SAPS also launched a victim-friendly room that will be of great service to the KwaMakhutha community.
Department of Community Safety and Liaison spokesperson Sindiswa Hlophe said the department, Durban West District, conducted a monitoring and evaluation programme at KwaMakhutha police station and it was discovered that their victim-friendly facility was not friendly.
Therefore, the department, the KwaMakhutha police station and other stakeholders hosted a crime awareness dialogue with the intention of finding ways to curb crime in the area, Hlophe said.
She said the programme also included revamping a victim-friendly facility as it had no person dealing with GBV and femicide matters.
“Awareness programmes are ongoing,” Hlophe said.
In August 2020, DA spokesperson on community safety and liaison Sharon Hoosen revealed that some police stations in KZN did not have victim-friendly rooms to attend to victims of abuse.
One of the calls the DA had made to various MECs in the province was for decent victim-friendly rooms.
