Durban – A 22-year-old suspect is expected to appear in court again next week after he was arrested for drug possession in Wentworth, south of Durban, while another suspect, aged 19, was arrested for a murder committed in April 2021.
Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said that a multidisciplinary team held a joint operation in Wentworth last Wednesday. The team comprised the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, National Intervention Unit, Provincial Investigations and Tracking Task Team, National Stabilisation Team, metro and the eThekwini District Task Team.
Ngcobo said that the team went to Woodville Road after receiving information regarding a group of suspects who were wanted for murder, attempted murder and dealing in drugs.
“Upon arrival at the identified premises, police surrounded the house. They found a man inside the house and during a search, 420 capsules of heroin worth R10 000 were recovered as well as an undisclosed amount of cash,” Ngcobo said.
She said that a 22-year-old was arrested for possession of drugs and appeared before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Sunday and was remanded in custody until September 19.
Ngcobo said that a second suspect, aged 19, was found at another address and was arrested for a murder that he allegedly committed on April 30 last year during which a 19-year-old man was shot and killed on Woodville Road.
“The suspect was initially arrested on the day of the incident; however, he was granted bail. He made several appearances at the Durban Magistrate’s Court until he absconded. A warrant of arrest was issued by the court and he was re-arrested during the operation,” Ngcobo said.
She added that the suspect appeared before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Sunday and was remanded in custody until his trial resumes.
