KZN pupils head to England to represent SA in street dance championship

Durban — A group of pupils from KwaZulu-Natal have been selected to represent South Africa at the UDO World Street Dance Championships taking place this week.

The pupils are from six schools namely Westville Girls’ High School, Durban Girls’ High School, Kloof High School, Pinetown Boys’ High School, Eshowe High School and Sherwood Primary School.

The schools and pupils from them are:

  • Westville Girls’ High School: Nkanyezi Zwane, Aphelele Makhanya, Joan Luthuli, Deza Luthuli, Zodidi Ntanga, Malwande Mathunyane, Aphiwe Nxumalo and Thandolwethu Tshabalala.
  • Durban Girls’ High School: Mika Ruiters and Phumelela Khwela.
  • Kloof High School: Khethelo Nene.
  • Pinetown Boys’ High School: Lindokuhle Ndlovu.
  • Eshowe High School: Amkelwa Xulu.
  • Sherwood Primary School: Smangaliso Zondi and Makhosazane Zuma.

The department said all pupils were awarded national colours by the Federation of Dance Sport South Africa.

It also said they proudly represent their schools, KZN and South Africa.

Beaming with pride, KZN Department of Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka congratulated the athletes and management selected to represent Dance Sport South Africa at the UDO World Street Dance Championships.

“We celebrate your dedication and look forward to your continued success on the global stage," said MEC Hlomuka.

The UDO World Street Dance Championships is not just a five-day event but it is regarded as the most prestigious dance competition of them all.

Dancers have a chance to win trophies, prizes, and prize money, and ultimately be crowned a world champion.

Categories include solos, duos, trioquads, battles (hip hop, popping, all styles, litefeet and breaking), teams, supercrews, parent teams and ultimate advanced teams.

There are also beginner, novice, intermediate and advanced levels.

Dancers can fall under the following ages: (U6, U8), U10, U12, U14, U16, U18, O18.

The event will be at Winter Gardens, 97 Church Street, Blackpool, England, from August 14 to 18.
