Durban — A man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Hawks KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said that on Monday, the Scottburgh Regional Court sentenced Mondli Msomi, 39, to eight years’ imprisonment for possession of an unlicensed firearm and two years for possession of unlicensed ammunition.

Mhlongo said that in March 2019, police received information about the suspect who was transporting a firearm from Port Shepstone to Durban. He was intercepted along the N2 near Hibberdene. His vehicle was searched and an AK-47 with four live rounds was found.

He said Msomi was arrested and charged accordingly. During the finalisation of his trial in September last year, Msomi, who had been found guilty, fled while out on bail. A warrant of arrest was issued.

“Earlier this month, Hawks members from Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation received information that Msomi was awaiting trial in a separate matter at New Prison Correctional Services in Pietermaritzburg.”

Msomi was brought back to the Scottburgh Regional Court and was sentenced on Monday. His sentences would run concurrently, Mhlongo said.
