Durban — Parts of three eThekwini Municipality areas are currently without water.

Municipal spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said there was an interruption of water supply to some parts of Phoenix, Ntuzuma and Verulam.

The municipality said it was aware of the interruption of water supply in some areas supplied by Phoenix, Ntuzuma and Verulam reservoirs.

“The interruption is due to inadequate supply of water from the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works to these reservoirs,” Mayisela said.

He reminded the public there was an ongoing rationing process introduced by the municipality to deal with the water supply challenge.

Areas being rationed are those supplied from the Durban Heights Water Treatment Plant.

Water rationing is implemented due to a reduced water supply from Umgeni Water’s Durban Heights Water Treatment Plant. The reduced water supply is a result of extensive damage to two raw water pipelines caused by floods in April.

According to a work schedule provided to Umgeni Water by the appointed contractor, repairs to the damaged pipes are expected to be completed by June 2023.

“While Umgeni Water continues to make progress in providing full contracted volumes of drinking water to eThekwini, a shortfall remains and will be eradicated when repairs at Durban Heights Water Treatment Works are completed and the system is fully operational,” Mayisela explained.
