Durban — A suspect is expected to appear in court again next week for the murder of a Durban metro police service constable.
Hawks KwaZulu-Natal Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said that on Monday, Sphakamiso Sosibo, 29, briefly appeared in the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court for the murder of Constable Nkosinathi Ndlovu, 40, who was a Durban metro police officer.
It is alleged that Ndlovu was off duty when he was attacked by Sosibo and his accomplice at the Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi, south of Durban, in June this year.
“The suspects fired shots at him and robbed him of his service pistol. He was declared dead at the scene and his wife suffered gunshot wounds. She was taken to hospital for medical attention,” Mhlongo said.
He said that a case of murder was reported at the Umlazi police station and the case docket was later transferred to the Hawks members from Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation.
“Sosibo was arrested by Phoenix Trio Crimes for an unrelated murder which happened in Phoenix on October 13, 2022. He was found in possession of the firearm that was robbed from Constable Ndlovu,” Mhlongo said.
“Intensive investigation was conducted and he was charged with the murder and robbery of Constable Ndlovu. He was remanded in custody and the case was postponed to December 19, 2022.”
Meanwhile, two police officers were among five suspects who were arrested and expected to appear in court on Wednesday (today) on charges of a double murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice.
Mhlongo said that Hawks members from the Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, working together with Port Shepstone Tactical Response Team and Ugu District detectives, arrested five suspects aged between 38 and 47.
“They were arrested for (alleged) murder, kidnapping, defeating the ends of justice and attempted murder which happened at Marburg area in Port Shepstone,” Mhlongo said.
He said that two males were reported missing at Msinsini police station in February this year. A missing person docket was registered and the investigation ensued. On February 28 this year, a decomposed body was found in the Msinsini area and it was positively identified as one of the missing persons.
The investigation continued and in September, the skeletal remains – suspected to be the other missing person – were found in the same vicinity.
“DNA samples were collected and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis. It is alleged that the victims were severely assaulted by the suspects and their bodies were dumped in the bushes.
“The five suspects are expected to appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court today (Wednesday) and more arrests are imminent,” Mhlongo said.
