Durban — A murder suspect was released due to a lack of evidence in connection with the murder of an Asian man who was robbed and stabbed to death in August this year.
Marshall Security managing director Tyron Powell said that on Tuesday, their team members assisted the Cato Manor SAPS Field Unit with tracking down and arresting a suspect wanted for murder in the Cato Manor area.
Powell said that at about 9.30pm, information was received from the Cato Manor SAPS Field Unit and eThekwini District Crime Intelligence (CI) on the possible location of a suspect who was wanted for murder in the Chesterville area.
He said that the man and his accomplice, who had already been arrested by the SAPS, were suspected to be involved in the armed robbery and murder of an Asian male in August this year. While waiting for assistance after his vehicle broke down on the N2, the victim was robbed of his cellphone and R150 cash by two suspects, who proceeded to fatally stab him.
“The Cato Manor SAPS Field Unit, eThekwini District CI, members of our special operations team and other private security role players proceeded to the Cato Manor area for a joint operation where the suspect was arrested,” Powell said.
“The suspect was transported to Cato Manor SAPS for further investigation and processing.”
Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said: “We can confirm that a 26-year-old man was taken in for questioning and was released due to lack of evidence.”
