DURBAN - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is on Thursday meeting victims of an alleged police assault that took place in Tshwane.
Ipid spokesperson Grace Langa said the incident happened on October 2 where three men were allegedly sjamboked by eight metro police officials while at the Tshwane Impound Vehicle Centre where they went to collect their car.
She says that three male individuals went to Tshwane Impound Vehicle Centre to collect their vehicle.
“On arrival, they demanded to get their vehicle, and out of nowhere, about eight metro police officials came out and assaulted them. They sjamboked them, and they all sustained injuries. They even went to hospital. The matter is under investigation,” said Langa.

She said Ipid would be meeting with the victims on Thursday.
“We will also be collecting statements from the metro police officials whom we are still trying to identify. The investigation is ongoing.”
It is alleged the three men had gone to the centre to collect their car, which had been impounded. However, when they arrived, the gates were locked. The officers who allegedly assaulted them came from the streets and are alleged to have immediately begun assaulting them.
Langa said that while the incident took place on October 2. The police watchdog only received the matter on Wednesday.
One of the victims in a video taken after the assault is seen in the video saying that they were assaulted for no reason, and turns for the camera showing all his injuries.
“I’ll go to Bheki Cele if I have to. They can’t beat us, these people. They don’t have a right. Tell this thing I’m going to Bheki Cele. What am I supposed to say to my child when I get home with one eye that can’t see? They undermine us. We never fought those people.”
