Durban — Several central areas in eThekwini can expect nine hours of interrupted water supply due to maintenance work.
This was according to a public notice issued by the eThekwini Municipality on its Facebook page on Monday afternoon.
In the notice, the municipality informed residents about water restrictions in areas supplied by the Northdene 3 and Firwood Booster water pump stations.
Affected areas include:
- Firwood Reservoir: Malvern, Queensburgh, Northdene, Shallcross and Moseley Park
- Chatsworth 4 Reservoir: Arena Park, Buffels Bosch, Chatsworth Town Centre, Crossmoor, Ehlanzeni, Klaarwater, KwaMgaga, Montford, Moorton, Risecliff, Welbedacht East and West, Westcliff and Woodhurst
- Klaarwater Reservoir: Crossmoor, Klaarwater, Savannah Park, Shallcross and St Wendolins Ridge
- Shallcross Reservoir: Buffels Bosch, Burlington Heights, Savanah Park and Shallcross
- Washington Heights Reservoir: Mariannheights, Mariann Industrial Park, Nsiswakazi, Phumphele, Savannah Park, St Wendolins Ridge and Umshini
- Intake Reservoir: Ezinyathini, Klaarwater, Luganda, Nagina, Nsiswakazi, Pineview, Regency Park, Sithundu Hill and Welbedacht West
- Birch Road Reservoir: Mariann Industrial Park, Mulberry Park, Nirvana Hills and St Wendolins Ridge
- Harinager Reservoir: Shallcross.
The municipality apologised for any inconvenience.
“The restriction is due to maintenance work to be undertaken on the electrical infrastructure at both pump stations,” the municipality said.
“Maintenance work will commence on Wednesday, September 18 from 8am to 5pm.”
The municipality explained that during that time, there will be no pumping of water to dependent reservoirs until the work is completed.
However, reservoir outlets will remain open for the duration of the shutdown, except the Firwood Reservoir. Outlets at this reservoir will be closed during the shutdown.
“Residents in other reservoir supply zones, who may continue receiving water during this period, are urged to use it sparingly,” the municipality said.
“The reservoirs whose outlets remain open will be closely monitored, and if levels drop too quickly due to demand, then these reservoir outlets may also be closed to preserve water and reduce reservoir recovery time.”
