Durban — Having been gone for a decade, Mxolisi Majozi, known as Zuluboy, has returned from his sabbatical as he feels he has grown stronger musically.
The award-winning Ntuzuma-born actor and musician will host a black-tie event for media and record company executives on Friday to launch his new album, Malangeni, featuring the fallen gospel legend, Sfiso Ncwane.
He said he had kept a song they recorded back in 2013, and when the Daily News asked why, he responded: “You keep and treasure diamonds, cause they are precious.”
Majozi said the album was based mostly on love and that it would be a redirection of South African hip hop, pure and raw.
“What is going to be different about this album is that before I had a fear of expressing myself, now everyone is going to hear me expressing myself and being the truest I can be,” he said.
Majozi said that the journey of self has taught him to be expressive, having travelled to countries like Canada, the Netherlands and Italy while planning his album and writing new material. He said the beats from the album were from Canada.
Majozi previously acted in e.tv’s telenovela Durban Gen, playing the character MacGyver, and during his sabbatical he rediscovered his love for acting.
Majozi last released an album, called Crisis Management, in 2012. He later collaborated with Soweto Soul in 2017 in Europe, which featured the likes of Penny Penny and Soul Brothers, to give people in Europe a taste of South African sound.
Listeners were going to find comfort in his new album as it was going to shape the paradigm and restore hope and love in people, Majozi said.
“Having gone through a divorce, I still believe in love after everything that love has put me through, but I refuse to give up on it. That is what I want to instil in people, never giving up,” said Majozi.
Majozi and his team are expecting at least 300 people for the album launch, which will take place in Johannesburg at the Spark Gallery, Orchards. He will be performing with a live band, a DJ and a string quartet when he showcases his new material.
He urged people to take time for themselves and discover themselves, as they would, he said, be able to shift alone with the world.
