Tributes pour in for former ‘Isidingo’ actor Darlington ‘Papa G’ Michaels

South African actor Darlington Michaels, best known for his iconic role as Georgie “Papa G” Zamdela in “Isidingo”, has died.

Michaels’ death was confirmed in a statement by the public broadcaster, paying tribute to the talented actor.

“The SABC is deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Darlington Michaels. His immense contribution to the entertainment industry will forever be remembered. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Michaels family, friends and fans.”

Last week, ZiMoja reported that the legendary actor has not been feeling well for weeks and was admitted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto last week.

He suffered a stroke in 2016, which forced him to take a break from work and focus on his health. South African viewers last saw Michaels on screen in 2020, when he portrayed the role of Gap on Mzansi Magic’s drama series, “Vula Vala”.

Michaels trained and mentored the youth through his programme Melisizwe Community Theatre, putting performances in Soweto.

Tributes for the actor have been pouring in since news of his death broke Friday night. Michaels’ was well known for his versatility in languages, sense of style, his silk colourful shirts and rings were adorned by many of his fans.

Michaels career began on stage under the father of theatre, Gibson Kente, in the 90s.

Actor Spaces paid tribute to the fallen legend and said; "A true icon whose talent and legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of many.

“His immense contribution to the industry shaped South African television and left a profound impact on all who had the privilege to witness his artistry."
