The 2024 Durban Virginia Airshow is back in the skies over Durban and surrounds, and the sound of flying machines will echo across the region in the run-up to next Saturday’s display.

The long-loved show, which returned to the city last year after a 10-year hiatus, promises to be a spectacular display for aviation enthusiasts, thrill-seekers and families.

Last year it won the prestigious African Pilot Magazine’s Airshow of the Year award.

Next Saturday’s line-up features some of South Africa’s best aviation performers.

Highlights on the day will include performances by Scully Levin, who began his career in the South African Air Force as an instructor on Harvards before joining South African Airways where he served out a 38-year career. He has been an aerobatic competitor since the 70s and flown many types of aircraft for shows, from the 747-400 to warbirds, airliners in formation, landed on moving trucks and is best known for his leadership of the Trailblazers Aerobatic Team and the Flying Lions Aerobatic Team.

Five-time South African aerobatics champion Patrick Davidson of the Marksmen Aerobatic Team; On the Move’s Tristan Eeles and a display from aerobatic helicopter pilot Juba Joubert are also main attractions.

There will also be an Execujet flypast.

Back on land, there will be ground exhibits, food and refreshment stalls and entertainment.

Sponsors of the Virginia Airshow this year include Standard Bank and the uMhlanga Tourism Organisation.

Gates open at 8.30am and tickets cost R140 for adults and R100 for under-18s. Tickets are limited and are available at Ticketpro or at the gate on the day.
