Touring again after some time out is much-loved Pietermaritzburg-based classical pianist Christopher Duigan, who will be coming to Ballito on Sunday at 3pm to perform a programme of mid-winter classics at the All Souls Anglican Church in Umhlali/Salt Rock.
The performance will be repeated in St Agnes in Kloof on Tuesday at 7pm.
Duigan will be playing a selection of music with a relaxed and enchanting lyricism – like an afternoon in the winter sunshine.
With gentle undulation and extended, reassuring lines, this programme is guaranteed to please and soothe.
Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 26, a work of compelling Schubertian qualities, Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 62, Impromptu No. 1 and a selection from Schubert's Impromptus Op. 90 make up the selection.
Widely regarded as one of South Africa's leading concert pianists, Duigan has been recognised as a “South African piano icon” and “national musical treasure” (Classic Feel, June 2009).
He has been featured as a soloist, performing extensively with all leading South African orchestras, in over 100 concert performances, in a repertoire of more than 25 works for piano and orchestra.
Through public recitals, he has attracted a following with his innovative presentation and programming of a broad and eclectic taste in music.
Starting in a response to Covid isolation, Duigan performed in more than 250 online live-streamed broadcasts, reaching an entirely new global and local audience.
He has developed a large following in South Africa through the broadcast of his recordings, which are frequently aired on Classic FM (Johannesburg) and Fine Music Radio (Cape Town).
His ongoing Music Revival project has brought live classical performances, in hundreds of concerts, to new audiences across KZN and in the Cape Winelands.
Duigan’s recordings of the classical repertoire, in addition to his own compositions, with Spanish saxophonist David Salleras are available on all major streaming platforms.
