Durban metro police officer killed in crash near King Shaka International Airport

Durban - A 38-year-old Durban metro police officer died tragically in a vehicle crash on the R102 near King Shaka International Airport early on Sunday morning.

Metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Geraldine Stevens said there was an accident on the R102 in the vicinity of King Shaka International Airport involving a metro police vehicle.

“It was a single-vehicle accident. A metro police officer is deceased,” she said.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the circumstances surrounding the incident were being investigated.

Gwala said on October 16, at 6.10am, an accident occurred on Gopalall Hurbans Road near the King Shaka traffic light.

She said a vehicle collided with a guard rail.

“The 38-year-old man was declared dead at the scene,” said Gwala.

The matter was being investigated by Tongaat SAPS.

In a separate incident, Reaction Unit South Africa(Rusa) reported that a four-year-old boy was among six injured in a collision involving a vehicle and a SAPS van on Phoenix Highway in the vicinity of Clayfield Drive in Phoenix on Monday morning.

Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram said Rusa members received a call for assistance from a passer-by at approximately 10.01 am.

He said members were immediately dispatched to the scene and on arrival found other emergency services in attendance.

“It was confirmed that four adults from a blue Honda Ballade sustained moderate injuries while a minor child was seriously injured. A member of the South African Police Service (SAPS) who was driving a branded vehicle was also injured and required medical attention. The injured were transported to hospital by different private ambulance services,” said Balram.

Balram added that the circumstances leading up to the collision were not immediately confirmed.

Police were approached for comment.
