Durban – KwaZulu-Natal premier says measures have been taken to improve and stabilise water supply in the Ugu District on the KZN South Coast.
Speaking at a media briefing, this week, Nomusa Dube-Ncube said the war room in district had made some improvements and was implementing a raft of measures to bring stability in the provision of water services in this district.
She says these measures include refurbishment of the mechanical and electrical components of St Helen’s Rock.
Dube-Ncube says this project has made a significant impact in the improved provision of water services to the greater Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality community.
“The areas that have benefited from this project range from Hibberdene to Ramsgate, including the rural areas of Boboyi, Murchison, Gamalakhe and surroundings.”
She added that the Umzimkhulu Dam level had steadily increased after the implementation of the project. Over the past few weeks, the dam was sitting at 94%.
The second project was the refurbishment of the Umtamvuna mechanical, electrical, and civil components project which was implemented to minimise short to medium term water supply disruptions to all supply areas in the Umtamvuna system.
The premier said more than R6 million was received through the Cogta Massification Grant for the project.
“This project has been completed. We are still far from satisfied but there is progress.”
A couple of weeks ago The Mercury reported that the Ugu District Municipality was considering regularising the illegal water connections in an effort to curb rampant theft and generate much-needed revenue.
The municipality indicated that it was losing millions of rand as a result of illegal connections that were compounding the water supply problems.
