Slight gain for NFP as other parties retain seats in KZN by-elections

DURBAN - The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) on Thursday announced the results of yesterday’s by-elections that were held in eThekwini, Nongoma and Okhahlamba municipalities.

Apart from very low voter turn-out in the eThekwini ward, where hiccups had occurred, the voter turn-out for the rest of the wards was above 50%.

According to the results the ANC retained its seat in eThekwini, the National Freedom Party (NFP) gained a seat previously held by the IFP and retained another seat while the IFP retained a seat.

The IEC said that the ANC retained ward 101 in eThekwini Municipality and the new councillor is Mkhipheni Mzimuni Ngiba.

“The party retained the seat won in the 2021 municipal elections by winning 41.49% of the total votes cast compared to 48.00% in the 2021 municipal elections. Voter turn-out yesterday was 16.04%.”

In the Okhahlamba Municipality, the IFP retained ward 6 and the new councillor is Robert Simangaliso Ngwenya.

“The party retained the seat won in the 2021 municipal elections by winning 57.91% of the total votes cast compared to 48.82% in the 2021 municipal elections. Voter turn-out yesterday was 57.26%.”

In Nongoma, the NFP retained ward 17 and the new councillor is Bongukwazi Sonbon Mbatha.

“The party retained the seat won in the 2021 municipal elections by winning 44.85% of the total votes cast compared to 46.96% in the 2016 municipal elections. Voter turn-out yesterday was 50.56%.”

The IEC added that the NFP won ward 20 in Nongoma and the councillor is Nkokhelo Msomi.

“The party gained the seat previously won by the IFP in the 2021 municipal elections by winning 36.67% of the total votes cast compared to 37.93% won by IFP in the 2021 municipal elections. Voter turn-out yesterday was 51.11%.”
