Lawn bowls, a game steeped in tradition, thrives on its core principles of camaraderie, sportsmanship and respect.

Yet, it has been observed that the long-established etiquette distinguishing this sport is gradually eroding.

This decline not only undermines the spirit of the game, but also threatens the harmonious atmosphere for which lawn bowls is celebrated.

At its heart, etiquette in lawn bowls is simply the practice of “good sportsmanship”.

It’s about knowing and applying acceptable behaviour with common sense, fairness, honesty and consideration for others. This ethos is not limited to players, but extends to markers, umpires and spectators.

Etiquette encourages a spirit of inclusivity and co-operation. Players should show respect for opponents, keep chatter to a minimum during play and avoid distractions.

Applauding good shots, regardless of which team delivered them, is a simple yet powerful gesture of sportsmanship.

Similarly, markers and umpires must uphold impartiality, ensuring fairness and professionalism in their roles.

Spectators, too, play their part by observing the game respectfully without interfering or creating disruptions.

When in doubt about etiquette, asking questions is always appropriate. A willingness to learn fosters mutual respect and enriches the bowling community, ensuring that everyone shares in the enjoyment of the game.

Just as etiquette governs conduct on the green, a club’s constitution governs its operations.

This document outlines how office bearers and management committee members are appointed, their powers and the procedures they must follow.

Adherence to the constitution is non-negotiable – failure to comply can lead to serious legal and ethical implications.

For instance, if a club’s committee members are not lawfully appointed, their decisions and actions may lack legitimacy.

In extreme cases, these individuals could be held personally liable for the club’s actions.

To avoid such pitfalls, club committees must operate transparently, follow constitutional procedures and remain accountable to their members.

All clubs affiliated with Port Natal Bowls and Bowls South Africa are bound by the constitutions of these associations.

Upholding these constitutions involves not only ethical conduct, but also the diligent application of policies and procedures.

The club’s management committee acts as the custodian of these principles, administering the club’s affairs in line with members’ wishes.

Committees are elected by members to serve their interests and represent the club’s best values.

Leadership in bowls clubs requires fairness, impartiality and integrity. Decisions should benefit the entire club rather than a select few or the committee itself.

Ultimately, good governance in lawn bowls is about more than adherence to rules – it’s about fostering trust and ensuring every member feels valued.

Clubs that prioritise ethical leadership and etiquette on and off the green strengthen the bonds of their community and uphold the proud traditions of this exceptional sport.

By embracing etiquette and ethics, lawn bowls can continue to flourish as a game that champions not only skill, but also friendship, respect and shared goals.
