The Concept A-Class shows us where Mercedes-Benz is heading with its next generation compact car.
No longer the top-heavy, automotive shopping trolley with its 'sandwich floor' chassis, the new one slots onto a conventional platform, allowing a far more youthful and eye-catching design and better road holding.
The concept, which makes its world debut at the Auto Shanghai show later this month, translates the sporty design language that we've seen in production models like the CLS and numerous concepts into three-door hatchback format. Watch out Audi A3.
While the production model will offer a range of small turbocharged petrol engines, in addition to a Renault-sourced diesel, the concept alludes to a performance model with its 157kW 2-litre turbopetrol engine. However, its direct injection technology is almost certain to make its way into the smaller engines, along with the concept's dual-clutch transmission.
The concept also suggests that the next A could be the gadget wizard of its class, with a radar-based collision warning system. This device will scream at a dopey driver who hasn't noticed that an accident is imminent and it'll get the brake assist system ready for action.
Inside, the concept's dashboard has been shaped like the wing of an aircraft and features a translucent, stretchable cloth lining - allowing the bionic, cellular structure of the component to remain visible.
The production model will, of course be much more conventional than that, but don't rule out the smartphone that's fully integrated into the car's operating concept, with its functions all operated by Comand Online.
The new front-wheel drive platform that underpins this car will spawn a whole family of A- and B-Class variants, including a coupe-like 'baby CLS' four-door coupe.
