Hyundai is taking another stab at the Corolla's turf with its new Elantra, which has just arrived in South Africa.
We'll bring you the full story and driving impressions on Monday, so for now let's take a quick look at what the local range offers.
What stands out immediately is its more modern and daring exterior design. Hyundai calls it “fluidic sculpture” but however you prefer to label it, it's a refreshing departure from the rather bland styling of its predecessor. It's practical too, with what's described as “class above” mid-size car interior space
There are two basic models on offer locally - a 1.6 GLS for R186 900 and a 1.8 GLS that sells for R214 900, the latter also available with automatic transmission for R10K more.
The 1.6-litre engine is very powerful for its size, generating 96kW at 6300rpm and 157Nm at 4850rpm and propelling it from 0-100km/h (at sea level) in a claimed 10.7 seconds. According to Hyundai, it'll sip just 6.1 litres per 100km on the combined cycle.
Next up is a 1.8-litre petrol motor, good for 110kW at 6500rpm and 178Nm at 4700rpm, 0-100 in 9.3 seconds and sipping 6.5 litres per 100km. Both engines are mated to a six-speed manual transmission as standard and the 1.8 can be ordered with a six-speed automatic gearbox.
All models are fitted with air conditioning, four-speaker MP3/CD audio system with USB input and steering wheel controls, trip computer, electric windows and mirrors and automatic windscreen wipers. The big spec difference then, are the 17-inch alloys that you find on the 1.8 GLS (the 1.6 GLS has steel rims with hubcaps). The 1.8 also adds side and curtain airbags to the dual front airbags fitted to the 1.6.
