Lexus has unleashed its third assault on the BMW 3 Series' turf with this all-new IS sedan that's almost certain to split opinion with its daring design.
The compact sports sedan takes much of its inspiration from the recent LF-CC concept car and the front end sees a bolder interpretation of the Japanese brand's 'spindle' grille design.
The fussily-shaped headlights, which sit above separate L-shaped daytime running lights, are likely to be the biggest point of contention when people argue the merits of this new design. It's certainly aggressive from all angles, if nothing else.
HYBRID JOINS RANGE
Featured in the pictures is the F Sport trim option, which has a distinctive grille and front bumper - among other additions. F Sport will be available across the range - which, on international markets at least, includes IS 250 and IS 350 petrol models and (for the first time) an IS 300 petrol-electric hybrid.
No output figures have been released as yet, nor any real technical details but we'll work on the assumption that it retains the rear-wheel drive configuration of its predecessors.
LFA-INSPIRED CABIN
Inside the new IS you'll find what Lexus calls a 'driver-focused' cockpit, inspired by the LFA supercar.
Lexus also sought to create a more inspiring driving position by lowering the hip point of the front seats and the angle of the steering wheel.
Rear seat space is said to be significantly improved (in fact class leading in terms of knee room), thanks to the third-generation sedan's increased width, longer wheelbase and thinner front-seat design.
