Carol Shelby and the boys have just announced their most powerful creation ever - and it's simply called the Shelby 1000.
Basically, the team started off with a 2012 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and “kicked its handling, horsepower and braking to the performance edge.”
The Shelby 1000 will be offered in two versions - a street-legal car that puts out approximately 708kW and a track car that's rated at over 820kW.
Both cars offer roughly ten times the power of a 1.4-litre hatchback to put that into perspective.
How'd they do it?
It all started with Ford's stock 5.4-litre V8, which Shelby American stripped down to the block and added new rods, crank and pistons. The team flowed the heads, upgraded the cooling and exhaust systems, replaced the supercharger, tuned it some more and then added what they call “a little Shelby magic.”
Shelby American has also tinkered with the chassis, installing new struts, sway bars and bushings. The new, and all-important, braking system has six-piston calipers in front and four at the back.
The company will only be building a limited run of these superlatively furious Mustangs, at an expected cost of $200 000 Stateside, which works out to R1.52-million at today's exchange rates.
But it's basically four times the price of the 485kW Shelby GT500.
