German premier carmaker Mercedes-Benz has announced ambitious plans to considerably expand its model range.
Development chief Thomas Weber told the Auto Bild motoring weekly: “We are planning to introduce 13 all-new models by 2020.”
The model offensive is designed to boost the appeal of cars with the three-pointed star among younger buyers.
Weber said the use of modular platforms shared between different models would enable a large number of new cars to be developed. The first of this new generation is the four-door CLA coupe which derives from the new A-Class platform and running gear.
Next up is an off-road-styled SAV (sports activity vehicle), likely to be based on either the A or B-Class. It would carry the tag GLA.
From the C-Class limousines upwards all future Mercedes-Benz models are set to be offered in hybrid petrol-electric or diesel-electric versions, said the brand's development head. - Sapa-dpa
