Ford has aggressively laid on the style and technology in its all-new Fusion mid-sized sedan, which will also reach global markets as the new Mondeo in early 2013.
Looking every bit like a toned-down, 'real-world' version of the recent Evos concept, its most distinguishing feature is that Aston Martin-like grille, flanked by a pair of slim headlights.
Embracing the green revolution with full might, the Fusion is also the first sedan to offer a choice between petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions.
On the petrol front, Ford will be offering American models with a choice of one naturally aspirated and two turbocharged EcoBoost motors in 1.6- and 2-litre capacity and with the latter offering the choice of all-wheel drive. Naturally, all other models are front-wheel driven. Six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions are offered.
The Fusion Hybrid is powered by an all-new 2-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine, assisted by new, weight-saving lithium-ion batteries that help it claim best-in-class fuel consumption.
An even more frugal option is the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, which aims to be the most efficient mid-sized car in the world.
For the best balance between ride and handling, all Fusions are fitted with a brand new multi-link rear suspension system.
The Fusion's technological arsenal also extends to driver assistance systems, the sedan offering goodies like lane keeping assistant, blind spot information system, adaptive cruise control, active park assist and Ford's SYNC communications and entertainment system that allows voice-activated communication through a driver's cell phone and interaction with the car's radio.
Despite it seeming like such a serious contender in the mid-sized sedan market, Ford South Africa says there are currently no plans to bring the saloon to our shores.
