Monterey, California - An ultra-rare Ferrari where the driver sits in the middle of three seats is expected to sell for more than the equivalent of R360 million at auction.
Only two Ferrari 365 P Berlinetta Speciales were built by the famous Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina, in 1966.
This model, pictured, was owned by Luigi Chinetti Sr, an Italian-born racing driver who was instrumental in introducing the Ferrari marque to the world. He died in 1994.
The Speciale had a 4.4-litre V12 engine which was fitted behind the driver, who was centrally positioned with room for a passenger on either side. The unusual layout was replicated 30 years later in the iconic McLaren F1 supercar.
Legend has it the car was returned to Pininfarina following complaints that it was unstable at its top speed – of 300km/h.
The car, which has been driven less than 8000km, will be sold by the Chinetti family at next month’s Gooding & Company sale in Monterey, California.
David Gooding, boss of the auction house, called the car ‘one of the most important and valuable Ferraris ever designed’.
