At the 2011 Tokyo motor show Volkswagen unveiled the Cross Coupé concept, powered by a plug-in petrol-electric hybrid system.
This week, a new Cross Coupé will make its debut at the Geneva motor show, but with an even more frugal plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
The 2012 Cross Coupé concept combines a direct-injection turbodiesel and two electric motors, for a claimed fuel consumption in the new European driving cycle of just 1.8 litres per 100 km, which translates to CO2 emissions of 46 g/km - in a 225kW SUV that weighs nearly two tons and has a top speed of 220km/h.
That hard-to-believe sequence of numbers - and the wintry photo above - are all VW has released so far; further information about the Cross Coupé concept has been promised when the concept is officially presented at Geneva on Tuesday, March 6.
