Wolfsburg, Germany - These two sketches are the first visuals from Volkswagen of an as-yet-unnamed concept to be revealed on 3 March at the Geneva motor show.

Volkswagen has confirmed, as far back as October 2014, that it is working on a new Passat CC, and this is apparently a preview concept for that project.

It's very much in the same mould as the 2009 original, with a sleek 'four-door coupé' profile under a swoopy roofline but with crisper, sharper-edged styling, and provides a strong indication of what we can expect when the production version sees the light of day, probably in time for the 2017 model year.

The maker says the concept has "an innovative all-wheel drive system" using a turbopetrol engine and two electric motors. Well, the French seem to have tried out every possible combination of independent hybrid all-wheel drive already, so we're not so sure about that.

Nevertheless, if we had to guess, we'd expect to see a transversely-mounted 1.4-litre TSI in tandem with a flywheel-shaped electric motor driving the front wheels via a multispeed-speed DSG transmission and a second, possibly more powerful, electric motor driving the rear wheels through a reduction 'box and an electrohydraulic clutch.
