Detroit - Volkswagen edged out General Motors for second place in the global vehicle sales race during the first three quarters of the year, but Toyota was expected to keep its lead to stay in first place.

On Wednesday GM said that it had sold 7.37 million cars and trucks worldwide from January through September. But VW said it sold 7.4 million to nudge GM out of second place.

Toyota won't release its numbers for the first three quarters until late October. But it was in first place in the first half with sales of almost 5.1 million, and it expects the full-year figure to be 10.1 million.

Toyota finished first last year with a record 9.98 million sales while GM finished second and VW third.
