Alright, so it's not exactly a GTI, but VW's new Polo BlueGT does have enough power to mess with a Suzuki Swift Sport - and yet, according to claimed figures, it's not much thirstier than a Polo BlueMotion.
Sounds like they've just thrown a semi-hot diesel engine into it then? Wrong - the BlueGT is actually powered by a petrol engine with cylinder deactivation.
Its heart is a 1.4-litre turbo engine that shuts off its second and third cylinders under light and medium loads, between 1250 and 4000rpm. Of course, all of this can be overridden by a stomp of the pedal, the full power coming back seamlessly in a matter of 13 to 36 milliseconds.
In speedy mode, then, the engine churns out 103kW and is said to be capable of running from 0-100km/h in only 7.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 210km/h.
Drive it in economy mode, however, and VW reckons you can achieve a combined cycle consumption figure of just 4.7 litres per 100km, translating into a CO2 figure of 108g/km.
The petrol engine is clearly catching up to diesel in the technological race and VW says this engine technology will be commonplace in its future cars.
