The Tiguan Allspace is no more.. Long live the new Volkswagen Tayron.

Revealed for the European market this week, the new midsize SUV is based on the third-generation Tiguan, but is around 230mm longer, slotting between the latter and the more premium Touareg.

The new Tayron is expected to reach South African shores in 2025, with final timing as well as specifications and pricing to be confirmed closer to the time.

In Europe, the Tiguan Allspace replacement will be available in both five-seat and seven-seat configurations, with the former offering a holiday-friendly boot capacity of 885 litres.

The European Tayron is available with a variety of mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, but the South African line-up will more than likely mirror the local Tiguan in offering conventional 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TSI petrol engines and perhaps the venerable 2.0 TDI diesel.

For the record, the most potent plug-on hybrid model in Europe has 200kW on tap and, thanks to a 19.7 kWh battery, can achieve a claimed all-electric range of over 100km.

The Tayron is well tailored to towing as well. Says VW, the 4Motion (all-wheel drive) versions of the SUV can tow up to 2.5 tonnes and the vehicle also comes with a Trailer Assist manoeuvring system that’s said to make even large boat trailers and horseboxes easy to handle.

Furthermore, a wide range of high-tech options are being offered on the Tayron, including HD matrix headlights with interactive lighting functions, DCC adaptive chassis control, ChatGPT integration and a 700-watt Harman-Kardon sound system, to name a few of the highlights.

“The new Tayron combines everything that a Volkswagen stands for: versatility, comfort and new technology. With up to seven seats, a premium interior, generous storage space and innovative drive systems, the large SUV is the ideal companion for families and adventurers alike,” says Martin Sander, Board member responsible for sales and marketing.

For the time being, however, the Tiguan Allspace remains on sale in South Africa, priced from R687,800 to R916,400.

Stay tuned for more details on the new Tayron in 2025.
